Process Investigation Considerations

By using open “how”, “when”, “where”, “what”, “why” and “who” type questions we can begin to understand the process we are investigating much better than just by observation alone.

Example questions

  • What is the process trying to achieve? And why?
  • Does the process work? Are there bottle necks?
  • Are customers and stakeholders happy? How do you know?
  • How long does everything take?
  • What are the triggers? When do they appear?
  • What performance data exists?
  • How many mistakes are made? What's the impact?
  • What technology is used? Is it fit for purpose?
  • Who's involved? What's their role? And why?
  • Which other processes are linked?
  • Are there any external factors which constrain or assist?
  • How much effort does it take? What's the cost?

Example areas to investigate - customers, actors, volumes, activity, triggers, quality, time, environment, waste, technology, external influences, methodology, upstream impacts, downstream impacts.
