What is Process Mapping?

Just as a street map would show us how to get from A to B, a process map or model demonstrates the route we must follow to transform an input to an output.

Like geographical maps, process maps and models can be drawn at different levels depending upon the amount of detail your audience would like to see.

Tip

The differences are explained in the mapping and modelling processes section but both maps and models help us to understand the relationships between processes and the activity within them.

The simplest and most common type of process map is drawn in the form of a “flow chart” made of boxes and arrows to describe the course of the process and steps involved in the transformation activity.
