Process Modelling Shape Guide (Enhanced Elements)

Untrained users are not expected to draw models with the enhanced elements, although they may be required to understand them.

Rectangle shape with curved corners. Task

Used to describe the process activity using 'verb noun' notation. For example, lock workstation, validate application, review document, enter student details, update record etc.

Rectangle shape with curved corners, an additonal horizontal line at either end. Sub Process Activity

Used to indicate that there is activity delivered by a Sub Process.
Tip: the Sub Process should be referenced using an Annotation Box.

Diamond shapeDecision

Used to illustrate the change of flow following a decision task. Tip: use a response which best suits the task prior to the decision diamond, for example pass / fail, valid / invalid, approved / not approved, UK / Non-UK etc. Tip: ensure each condition has a guard [ ].

Diamond Shape with three arrows pointing towards, and one arrow pointing away. Merge

Signifies the join of two or more flows. This may be as a result of corrective action where once an item has been corrected it needs to merge back with the main flow.

Solid, vertical rectangle with arrows pointing towards and away. Fork and Join

Used to illustrate the beginning (fork) and end (join) of parallel activity (usually carried out by two or more actors) in the process. Tip: If the parallel activity does not re-join then the Flow Final indicators must be used to signify the end of the process.

Circle with a cross in the centre.Final Flow

Used to end one stream of a parallel flow where the rest of the process is continuing. Tip: there will always be more than one flow final. Tip: if flow finals are present then the Target Shape should not be used.

Hourglass symbol. Time Event

Can be used to signify a time based trigger, for example "7am" at the start of a flow, or waiting time within a flow, for example "1 hour".
